Update on Sarah

Posted on Mar 5th, 2007 by ayla : Illuminated Skye ayla
I posted last week about my nieces in Iraq.  Here are the words of Sarah, 98 pound Marine, as she discovers war:

Classification: UNCLASSIFIED Today was quite an awakening for me. We got the call that we had 6 patients coming in.  6 children.  Insurgents told the community that if they didn't stop sending their kids to school they would start killing the kids.  An IED was placed outside the school and was set off.  Only 2 of those 6 made it to the hospital.  The others died before the bird got to them.  Brought in was one male and one female.  The female was worked on and air lifted to someplace else.  The male died on the table.  I watched as they sewed up the boys chest. They then covered him with a blanket and asked myself and some others to take him down to the Angel room (where we keep all dead people until the appropriate people arrive).  On the way down on I heard someone who sounded upset.  Once he was down there some corpsman cleaned him of some of the dried blood really quickly and left. His father was there.  Now everyone was ushered out of the room except myself... and the boys body.  Right then after the chaplain, an inturpreter, and the boys father came in the room. Never have I felt what I did today. I watched this man come into the room.  White walls, no windows, thick air... crying.  Speaking in between sobs in some language that I didn't understand.  He kissed his son and raised his hands in the air. Talking to his God. Bawling. I had laid a body bag out prior, unknowing that he was coming.  Good thing I did because he took his shoes off walked onto it and prayed.  His son had a tube in his throat. The doctors had tried to save him.  His right side was really messed up.  Large chunks of skin and meat gone from his face and neck and chest. We bagged him... . After they left I was once again in the room alone and then I sat there for an hour  I cleaned up the large puddle of blood that had accumulated on the floor below his head and just sat.  I wondered to myself.  This poor kid hadn't done anything wrong at all.  I wondered it he had been good at sports.  Or really smart.  What his dreams and goals were.  I'm sure that just this morning he was eating breakfast and happy. We also had a Lance Corpral angel today.  But it wasn't as face smacking. Yep. That is what I did today.   Just a normal day I guess... Pray for us.

Camelot~Thank you!  It's so nice to have you back.  I missed you.

David ~ Sarah is a newbie in Iraq.  I'm worried silly about her because she's not in a very safe place and they will be moving her shortly to someplace even worse.  My other niece, Andrea, is on her second tour and is relatively safe with a pretty decent job.  Thank you for your kind wishes.
