Introducing Joey Dog Bidwell ~

http://aura.gaia.com/photos/35/342211/large/Amanda_s_Pictures_150.jpg?

(he's hard to get a good picture of because he is camera shy!)
This is the new addition to our family.  I'm not usually the kind of woman who runs out and tries to replace one pet with another.  It wouldn't be possible to replace Zoe'.   I had even decided no more german shepards (they shed an amazing amount of hair!).  I just think this little fella was meant to be ours.  Listen to my story and see if you agree.

Brad and I were driving home from Jerome and we were passing a relatively new place, "Windswept Kennels".  I had been wanting to stop in and see what it was like and asked Brad to pull in.  Besides, I felt like petting some puppies.  He said, "No way.  You'll want to buy a puppy."  I told him, "No, no, they just sell stuff like beagles & lhasa apso's.  I just want to check the place out and pet some puppies."  I made my own best puppy-dog eyes at him and he pulled in.  When we walked in we were immediately charged by a large German Shepard.  I almost peed myself and slammed the door closed.  The attendant put "Hannah," a daycare dog,  in a back room (she let her out later and she was a sweetie, just vocal) and we entered.  We were swamped by adorable little beagle & weimaraner puppies.  And then my eyes fell on a tiny little German Shepard boy sitting quietly all by himself and studying us.  My heart tugged.  I picked him up and he moaned and laid his little head in the crook of my neck and just cuddled as calm as can be.

Oh yeah, Brad started getting the puppy dog eyes from me again.  Probably from Joey too.  It turned out that the owner of the kennel breeds German Shepards and Joey was the last one left out of the current litter.  I couldn't see how anyone could possibly choose one of his brother's or sister's over him.  Well, he was expensive and Brad refused me.  But I could see it bugging him, especially when the little guy actually tried to follow us out the door.

I text msg'ed Jesse & told him about it and he texted back and said "What if it's Zoe'? You have to get him!" and  I replied "right?".  I told Mandi about it and she said, "What if it's Zoe'? Oh, we have to get him!" It was all just very strange.  I told Brad that I wanted to name him Joey and he said, "I told you we're not getting him."  I just smiled serenely and went to bed dreaming about Joey.

Morning came and I found Brad on the phone talking with the owner of the kennel.  Bargaining the price down a little (no papers needed, we're going to fix him anyway).  Next thing you know, he left and came home with my Joey Puppy.

I still miss Zoe' - madly! - it really doesn't ease that, but it does distract me because how sad can you be when you have a puppy breathing puppy breath in your face?  And he is the crying-est puppy I have ever owned.  He keeps me busy!  He whines and moans and has the idea that he has to keep it up even while you are petting him so that you will keep petting him (fat chance, everyone in the house fights for the chance to hold and pet him!).  He wakes me up crying and howling in the middle of the night and I have to get up with him.  I've been up since 4a.m. today- I wormed him and it gave him the runs (ewww) and wasn't that a mess in his kennel! Then bath time.  He's just now starting to settle back down, but of course he's wrapped in a baby blanket and sitting on my lap.

Crickett (Chihuahua & Queen/Alpha of the household) is giving me the evil bug-eye daily.  She hates it when I bring in new pets.  Cujo (toy poodle) wants to cuddle constantly "I'm the puppy, I'm your baby" he tells me as he sticks his tongue up my nose.  Winston (English Bulldog) is crazy to play with the new creature and Joey yelps in fright at that face and starts crying!

He's going to be my buddy and he's never going to go running in the back field.

Ayla, he is beautiful.  Oh, I'm so you've met and he will be with you.  I'm overjoyed at this prospect.  I'm still missing your Zoe too.  Still have Zoe's picture on my desk at work taped to the top of the computer.

What a handsome little fellow.  I can see the love in his eyes and I'm sure he's just reflecting back your love for him.  Yea, yea, yea … woo hoo woo hoo

oh Ayla,I envjy you!

not that I REALLY want a dog in my life, but who can resist a puppy? not even I can! :)
great story writing, by the way! loved reading every bit of it. especially your puppy - eyeing your husband and the 'vocal' German shepard called Hannah, that almost made you peeing yourself.. hahah…

do you guys really say a dog is 'vocal'? or was that a stroke of genius you can take credit for? you English speaking guys (and gals) have no idea how lucky you are with your language! you can do things in English that are absolutely unthinkable in German - short, sexy, funny word creations, that take two German sentences to translate properly… sigh. oh well.

anyway. sweet and lovely Joey. I'm so glad to hear that he has appeared to help you and your family healing. nobody can replace Zoe, but he will have his own place in your hearts - already has, of course, -and love is such a wonderful cure for broken hearts. the only, actually (as far as I know…) well done!

:)

happy for you all!

As soon as I saw the pic in your icon … I thought “What if that's Zoe.”

What a doll-baby! I am very happy for you and your family! How totally adorable that Brad quietly decided to adopt Joey after initially saying “no” … He loves you soooo much!

Baby doggies are really so much like babies aren't they? What a beauty! I'm very happy for you. Gabriele is so right in saying that your sharing of this - your writing is quite wonderful!

I'm very happy for you!

Thank you for stopping by everyone!  Isn't he a dollbaby though?  It ends there!  Good heavens he is a pain in the you-know-what.  He still hasn't got a clue about the whole house training thing and I guess I'm going to have to get stern with him soon.  I hate that!  Then again, these messes!  He had me up in the middle of the night with a mess the necessitated a bath again and now I wake up and see we've sprung ahead.  Gonna be a sleepy day! Hmmm… I just noticed we didn't lose an hour.  I must be tired! Can't read a clock correctly.
Gabriele - about using the word “vocal” for dogs … it's not the norm … but somehow I doubt if I'm the first one to say it.  Thanx for thinking it was brilliant tho - lol!  I'm so thankful that you know English ~ that way I don't have to learn German!  ;0)

Joey is just so cute! I am glad you got him. It really does seem meant to be. Ralphy, the fluffy white pup, drove us crazy with puppy antics for a while. Just be patient and more patient and even more patient, and it will pass. Of course, Ralphy's chewing paper into butterfly shapes passed as well, and I thought I might be able to sell them to a gallery (just kidding, but he did make butterflies.) Your other dogs will accept him soon, and they'll be a big, happy family. Ah, how I miss puppy breath!

when i saw Joey, i thought is WAS Zoe! And maybe indeed, is was!

congrats on your new baby.

and may your other babies adjust…maybe it is really good for them too…just not initially, but in less than 2 weeks, he will be like he's always been with the pack, eh? but they will have to teach Joey a thing or two!
